Have you noticed that there are hardly any English signs in Quebec? Even the road signs that exist for safety, do not have any English upon them.
Have you noticed that when there is any English upon signs, that the font is MUCH smaller than the French?
Does the government want you to go blind? :o)
Have you been yelled at or attacked physically because of just having spoken in English? It does happen. (See the links at the bottom of the page.)
In areas of Montreal where English speakers are over 75% of the population, there are few, if any English signs. Weird?? Childish?? YES!!! Welcome to Quebec!
IT IS ACTUALLY AGAINST THE LAW TO HAVE ENGLISH SIGNS, UNLESS THE FRENCH IS MUCH LARGER!
Xenophobia is an intense or irrational dislike or fear of people from other countries. In Quebec, xenophobia is one of Quebec’s many, many sociological problems. Quebec likes to think that French is in danger, so concocted anti-English laws, in order to protect French!! :o)
As a percent of the population, the English speakers of Quebec are almost twice that of the French speakers of Ontario. By law in Ontario, there must be French signs/service in anything government related in regions where at least 10% of the population is French speaking.
Advanced societies actually stand up for minority rights. Quebec is NOT anywhere near being an advanced society, in fact it is the exact opposite! :o(
The only signs that may appear in English at provincial government offices in Quebec are those related to safety, yet they do not post them! Does the government care about tourists? If “Yes”, they really have a weird way to show it!
Over 500,000 English speakers have left Quebec because of the xenophobia, as have the head offices of most major corporations. Businesses avoid Quebec because of the sign laws and other associated xenophobic/anti-business treatment.
If you think as a tourist, that the xenophobia of Quebec is disgusting, PLEASE write to the following government officials and tell them so!
